Sunshine Coast set to benefit from new Defence Export Strategy

Companies on the Sunshine Coast will benefit from the Australian Government’s new Defence Export Strategy released today. The Strategy comes in the context of a growing local defence industry, supported by Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace’s Sunshine Coast Defence Industry Initiative.

Mr Wallace said “Since my election I have been working hard to promote the Defence Industry on the Sunshine Coast. We need to reduce our dependence on tourism and construction, and encourage the creation of new high tech manufacturing jobs here on the Coast. With these highly skilled jobs of the future available, we will be able to give more of our talented young people the opportunity to learn, live and work on the Sunshine Coast, without needing to move away.”

The landmark Defence Export Strategy sets out the policy and strategy needed to make Australia one of the top ten global defence exporters within the next decade. In a nationwide expression of Mr Wallace’s ambition for the Coast, it forms a positive plan to boost Australian industry, increase investment and create more jobs for Australian businesses.

“We already have defence industry businesses like Eniquest on the Coast who are exporting locally-made defence materials overseas now. But we have many others like APAC Infrastructure or Praesidium Global who are exploring new export opportunities all the time. The Government’s Export Strategy is really going to help businesses like these to thrive” Mr Wallace said.

The Defence Export Strategy includes several new initiatives and investments, including a new Australian Defence Export Office, a new Australian Defence Export Advocate, and a $3.8 billion Defence Export Facility administered by Efic, Australia’s export credit agency.

This will help Australian companies get the finance they need to underpin the sales of their equipment overseas. The Government has also committed $20 million per annum to implement Defence Export Strategy and support defence industry exports.

“My Sunshine Coast Defence Industry Initiative is about helping local businesses to get ready to work in Defence, to help them identify opportunities, and ultimately to win more contracts here in Australia and overseas. The Defence Export Strategy will provide us with the tools we need to do even more.” he said.

This Strategy will complement the Turnbull Government’s record $200 billion investment in Australian Defence Force capability, and continue Australia’s record performance in job creation.
