Caloundra Mens Shed to get new home under a re-elected Morrison Government

Caloundra Men’s Shed will finally be able to construct a new home with more to offer members under a re-elected Morrison Government.

During a visit to the existing shed, Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace announced that a grant of $239,000 will be provided for construction of the new facility on Grigor St in Moffat Beach.

Mr Wallace said that the Caloundra Men’s Shed was already providing a valuable service to the Caloundra community and to local men’s health in particular.

“There are more than 28,000 men aged between 50 and 80 years in the Caloundra District and for those who need it Caloundra Men’s Shed offers friendship, a sense of purpose and a place for them to belong and contribute. Members have told me that without the Shed, some of them believe that they would not be alive today.” Mr Wallace said.

“But for too long Caloundra Men’s Shed has been limited by short term leases and not nearly enough space. Under a re-elected Morrison Government, this grant will provide the group with certainty and the space to grow for the years to come.”

The new 475m2 building would allow the Men’s Shed to increase its membership by 30% and to offer permanent facilities for both wood and metal working, as well as a paint shop. a forge, and social spaces.

Jim Lombard, Treasurer of the Caloundra Men’s Shed said “We have been squatting here virtually because we had no long term land tenure. Now, with the fact that the Council with great generosity has made some land available to us in Grigor street, and with this grant we will be able to build a permanent shed and expand the movement here in Caloundra.”

“We get enquiries almost every day from people wanting to join us but the current shed is limited in space. With the new shed it will allow us to expand the membership. We want to say thank you to Andrew Wallace and the Federal Government, because if we can get this grant we will be able to build a bigger permanent shed and offer that permanency to all of our members.” Mr Lombard said.

Mr Wallace said the funding for the Caloundra Men’s Shed was only possible because of the Morrison Government’s plan for a stronger economy.

“Only the Liberals and Nationals have a proven track record when it comes to managing the Budget,” Mr Wallace said.

“By paying down debt and growing the economy, we can afford to deliver funding for priorities in local communities such as the Caloundra Men’s Shed.

“This is all at risk under Labor. Bill Shorten and Labor pose the greatest risk to Australia’s economy in a generation, with plans for $387 billion in new taxes on small and family businesses, retirees, housing, income, investments, electricity and cars.

“Labor would put at risk Australia’s 27 years of consecutive economic growth.”

Mr Wallace said this year’s Federal Budget delivered Australia’s first surplus in more than a decade.

“The surplus guarantees funding for the essential services that you and your family need and rely on,” Mr Wallace said.

“This includes record funding for schools, hospitals, medicines and roads.”

Following lengthy negotiations with Sunshine Coast Council the Caloundra Men's Shed Inc has been granted a 3 year License on the Grigor St site which the Men’s Shed are optimistic will be converted into a 10 year lease.
