Re-elected Wallace calls for Queensland Labor Government to ‘wake up’
From 23 May 2019
The Queensland Labor Government must finally do the right thing and deliver their fair share of funding for the Sunshine Coast’s rail line in the wake of the Liberal National Coalition’s Federal election win, according to Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace.
Mr Wallace, who was re-elected on 18 May with an increased majority, said that the election result showed Queenslanders have had a gutful of Labor’s neglect.
“Sunshine Coast residents have had enough of the Palaszczuk Government’s politicking and inaction. They are tired of Labor’s idleness and blame shifting. The Morrison Government is investing 50% of the funding needed to duplicate the North Coast Rail line and get the regular and reliable train service we need. All we get from this do nothing, say nothing Labor State Government is excuses.” Mr Wallace said.
The Coalition Commonwealth Government allocated $390 million toward upgrades to the North Coast Rail in the 2018 Federal Budget, despite the rail being wholly owned and operated by the Queensland Government. To date, and under pressure following the Federal Government’s investment, State Labor have allocated only $160.8 million, or 20% of the project’s cost.
Mr Wallace said that Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk’s apparent backflip on approval for the Adani Carmichael mine has shown that even Labor know they have let Queenslanders down.
“While she is cajoling Jackie Trad and her extremist colleagues to do the right thing and support jobs in Central Queensland, the Premier should take a moment to give Minister Mark Bailey a call, tell him to pull his finger out and deliver a fair funding deal for the Sunshine Coast.” he said.
The State Liberal National Party has vowed to provide 50% of the funding for this project if elected to government in 2020.
“Deb Frecklington and the State LNP have listened to Sunshine Coast residents. They understand, just like the Federal Coalition Government, how important this project is to our community’s future. The people of the Sunshine Coast get it, the LNP get it, the Federal Government gets it. The only people in Queensland still not listening to Sunshine Coast locals are Annastacia Palaszczuk, Mark Bailey and their Labor colleagues.” Mr Wallace said.
“I call on the Premier and Mark Bailey to wake up to the clear will of Queenslanders, respect the people of the Sunshine Coast, and deliver the funding our community deserves. Let’s just get on with it!” he said.
